Bits of Sweetness: In honor of those who served...

In honor of those who served...

What a great thing to have a day set aside to honor those who have fallen all because they were willing to sacrifice their life for the protection of our country. With my brother serving right now, it has even more meaning to me. While I miss him greatly, and cannot wait until his leave after Adrian is born, I cannot let the feeling of missing him overshadow the greater fact that he is doing something so incredibly honorable. (I think often today, we lose sight of how honorable a thing it really is, and instead get wrapped up in how much we want them back, rather than keeping the feeling of honor alive, as they are doing what they wanted to do! If everyone was just safe and sound at home there would be no heroes, and no memorial day! So as hard as it is, it in its own way is a good thing.) This Memorial Day, take some time to show appreciation for those you know who have served. One neat thing I'll be doing is sending coffee to troops overseas through the fantastic Green Beans Cup of Joe for a Joe program at the coffee locations on bases.

$2. That's all it takes to greatly encourage a soldier! You get to add a note too, and they almost always write back! (They also have more than just hot coffee- iced coffee, frappuccinos, and more!

There aren't many Memorial Day activities in our area this year, so I came up with some ideas of my own to do with Andrew!

A patriotic waffle (although, I don't have blueberries, so I may just make some vanilla yogurt blue to have on the waffle with the bananas and berries!)

A patriotic coloring sheet, and writing a thank-note to send along with the coffee to a soldier.
I think it is so neat that Andrew can see my brother doing this(serving in the Navy).
I wouldn't be surprised if someday it  has an impact on him.
Even if he doesn't join the military, it is such a good thing
to for him to learn what it means to think beyond yourself, and protect others.

I don't have much planned other than that because we got all our fun in this weekend with family visiting.
We took a hike up near Deception Pass (a hike which I was later kicking myself for suggesting!!
There is a 475 foot incline!!!!! Imagine *that* 5 1/2 months pregnant! I did it though!! And the views were incredible!!)

Andrew greatly enjoyed the time with my aunt, uncle, and cousins!
(Throwing "big mighty rocks" into the ocean!)
(ha! How Andew's "projects" usually turn out- him supervising and relaxing while someone else
does his job for him!!)
Helping Jordan do push ups!
I loved having the time together too! It's been about seven years since I've seen both of my cousins!
Last time I was definitely not shorter than them both!!
(Deception Pass Bridge)
Amazingly enough with it being Memorial Day weekend, the beach was almost completely empty!
I guess we picked a good Friday to come!!  ( and if you're wondering, yes, the water really is *that* blue!)
Perfect day. 70 degree weather! (SO rare in May here!!)
We even got to see a bald eagle fly right over us with a freshly-caught salmon!
(Like, 15 feet over!!)
Of course I didn't have the camera with me! Ahh but the memory lives on!
 Enjoy your Memorial Day!
(Got any good plans? I'm looking forward to grilling up some honey lime chicken
& then making some of  this fun, patriotic cobbler for dessert!!)
Take a moment to honor someone too! (Don't forget about the coffee!!)
